If your South Carolina plates are expired and the registration has lapsed, you can still donate your car. You do not have to renew the registration or pay back fees just to give it away. As long as you have a valid South Carolina title in your name, Palmetto Wheels Exchange can accept your vehicle, arrange a free tow, and send you a tax receipt that supports Heritage for the Blind, a real 501(c)(3) serving people who are blind or visually impaired.
Here’s how it works for a car with expired tags in South Carolina: the tow truck comes to you—whether you’re in Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Rock Hill, Myrtle Beach, or out in rural areas like Lancaster County or Orangeburg. The vehicle does not need to be driven or insured. We handle the pickup and paperwork needed for transfer. Once it’s donated, the car becomes our responsibility. You should then notify the South Carolina DMV that you’ve transferred the vehicle so you’re not tied to future tickets or property tax. The tags and registration status don’t control your ability to donate—the title does.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Confirm you have a valid South Carolina title in your name
Find your South Carolina vehicle title and make sure your name is listed as the owner and there are no unknown liens. Expired registration is fine—what matters is ownership. Whether you’re in West Ashley, Five Points, North Augusta, or Florence, having the title ready is the key to moving forward without renewing your tags.
2. Call or go online to start your donation with the expired tags noted
Tell Palmetto Wheels Exchange that your registration has expired or lapsed. This is common and usually not a problem. We’ll ask a few basic questions about the car’s condition, mileage estimate, and location anywhere in South Carolina so the tow company knows what equipment to bring and where to go.
3. Schedule your free tow anywhere in South Carolina
We arrange a pickup time that works for you—at home, work, or a repair shop. We pick up in and around Columbia, Charleston, Greenville–Spartanburg, Hilton Head, the Grand Strand, and rural counties. The car does not need to run. There’s no cost to you for towing, storage, or handling the expired tags situation.
4. Sign the title over at pickup and hand the driver the keys
At pickup, you’ll sign the South Carolina title over to Palmetto Wheels Exchange following the driver’s instructions. You do not need current registration, inspection, or insurance to complete this step. The tow driver will load the vehicle and take it away. From that moment, the vehicle becomes our responsibility, not yours.
5. Notify the South Carolina DMV of the transfer and remove plates
After the tow, remove or recover your South Carolina plates if possible. Then notify the SCDMV of the sale/transfer according to their instructions, so future taxes and tickets don’t follow you. This helps close the loop and makes sure your expired-tag vehicle is fully off your record going forward.
6. Receive your tax receipt supporting Heritage for the Blind
Once the vehicle is processed, you’ll receive a tax receipt—generally at least $500 in deductible value, with donations over $500 reported on IRS Form 1098-C. Your expired registration doesn’t reduce your tax benefit. Your gift helps Heritage for the Blind provide services to people who are blind or visually impaired.
Potential complications to watch for
Title issues matter more than expired registration
Tip: If there’s no title, the name on the title is wrong, or a lienholder is still listed, we may need extra steps. Track down your South Carolina title before scheduling pickup. Expired tags are usually fine—unclear ownership is what can actually delay your donation.
Plates and DMV notification are easy but often forgotten
Tip: South Carolina can still send you property tax notices or hold you responsible for tickets if you don’t properly report a transfer. After you donate, remove the plates if you can and follow SCDMV guidance to record the transfer so you’re clearly off the hook going forward.
Out-of-state or transferred titles need a quick review
Tip: If your title is from another state but the car has been sitting in South Carolina with expired tags, we can often still accept it. Let us know upfront so we can confirm the correct signing instructions and avoid any last-minute surprises on pickup day.
Estate or multiple-owner vehicles require all signatures
Tip: If the car was jointly owned or part of an estate in South Carolina, we’ll need every listed owner, or the executor, to sign. This is unrelated to registration status but can slow things down if someone isn’t available, so it’s best to line up all necessary signatures early.
